Memory foam mattresses are where it's at now. Metal springs all throughout your bed? No thanks. Hard pass.

If you're currently looking into buying a new mattress, it helps to narrow it down to what kind of mattress you want. Memory foam is a great place to start, but as we said, it's a popular material right now — aka everyone is using it. Thus, finding your dream mattress may not be as breezy as you'd maybe expect. Don't freak out, though; we're here to help.

We take mattress shopping very seriously. Sleep is important, and the quality of your rest can make or break your day (and beyond). If you wake up feeling energized and refreshed, concentrating and functioning gets way more manageable. Sleep poorly one night, and you're going to end up feeling fatigued, irritable, and will likely end up horribly overcaffeinated.

Quality sleep means a better, happier life. That's why it's vital that you not only find the best mattress you can, but the best mattress specifically for you.

To start, we recommend you take stock of what your sleep habits are. What kind of sleeper are you? Do you toss and turn all night? What position do you usually find yourself in when you wake up? Do you prefer a firm mattress for support, or a soft one for comfort? Do you regularly overheat, or get cold? Are you prone to back pain? These are all questions you should answer for yourself before picking out your new bed. It's supposed to last you a while, so it's important that you don't settle for anything less than what you absolutely need — a good mattress is an investment.

No matter what mattress type you like, you can now find it online (probably), which beats going to the mattress store. But because you're not going to the physical store, you won't get to test out your mattress ahead of time.

Here are some things you'll want to consider before you make a decision:

  • Know your bed size: Take measurements of your bedroom and bed frame. Which will fit the most comfortably? If you'll be sharing the bed with a partner (or pet), don't get a twin size. Fun fact: Full and queen beds are the same width, the queen option is just longer. So if you aren't super tall, you can probably get away with a full, which is usually the more inexpensive choice.

  • Firm or soft?: It depends on personal preference and how you sleep. Normally, side sleepers will want something firmer for better spinal alignment, while stomach and back sleepers should be fine on a softer surface. But, of course, this isn't a hard and fast rule. Get what usually feels good to you.

  • Consider the warranty: Online mattresses don’t always come cheap, so you’ll want to consider a company’s warranty before making a commitment. Look for warranties that offer flexible coverage and support, so you won’t have to spend a lot on repairs and replacements. Also, free trials are helpful, just in case you end up unhappy with your first few nights.

We've read the reviews, compared the models, and have come up with our definitive list. Here are the best memory foam mattresses you can get online right now:

Body support is crucial for a good night’s sleep — especially if backaches are routine for you — and the Leesa Mattress can help you drift off to dreamland, sans pain.

Leesa's three-layer memory foam construction helps you stay comfortable while you sleep all through the night. A two-inch responsive memory foam layer hugs your curves, delivering just the right amount of bounce for shifting positions, which in turn keeps those wake-up-aches at bay. The center of the mattress is a two-inch recovery foam layer, which contours even more to your body shape, and eases joint pressure. At the bottom, a six-inch core foam layer gives extra support, tying it all together. You won’t have to worry about stiffness or sagging either, thanks to Leesa's construction.

White glove delivery is available (fancy!) for the Leesa memory foam mattress, but it's honestly simple enough that you can probably set it up yourself. Just unbox the mattress on its side, position it on a solid or slatted foundation, remove the outer layer of plastic wrap, and tear away the inner plastic. Since it's a memory foam mattress, it will then slowly expand in about an hour, and will take a few days to achieve a firm shape. It's seriously fun to watch it grow.

Another upside to Leesa's mattress is its 10-year limited warranty — if there’s a defect covered under the warranty, Leesa will repair or replace the mattress, no questions asked. It doesn't cover comfort preference or damage from improper equipment, though. As with any product, you can contact the manufacturer if you have any issues.

Comfort, durability, natural cooling, and easy setup make The Original Mattress by Casper a great pick for a good night’s sleep, no matter what your sleeping position is.

Great for back, side, and stomach sleepers, this Casper mattress has three foam layers — each one adding extra full-body comfort. The top layer is soft and made with cooling, breathable Airscape material to keep the night sweats at bay, the second zoned support layer minimizes aches and pains by cradling your natural curves and supporting pressure points, and the base layer rounds out the comfort factor by reinforcing the layers above, minimizing sinking and sagging while you doze off. Its durable construction means that out of all the online memory foam mattresses out there, it's a bit firmer than other options you'll find — so be mindful if you want a super soft mattress that has a lot of give. If that's you, Casper may not be the best pick.

The high-quality memory foam layers aren’t the only perk of the Casper mattress. It has a tough, removable cover made from recycled water bottles that’s built to withstand wear and tear for years to come (and a 10-year warranty if it doesn't). Need assistance with mattress assembly? Casper offers in-home setup, where their team will hand-deliver the mattress to you, set up any products that require assembly, and remove all the packaging once they’re done so you can use your mattress right away.

If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can contact Casper for speedy and helpful customer service support, which many claim to be top tier in terms of customer problem-solving.

Tons of people have issues when it comes to overheating at night — you aren't alone. If you too find yourself drenched in sweat when the sun rises, Tempur-Pedic could be the solution you need.

"Our breeze mattresses were designed in our thermal laboratory to help manage the micro-climate between your mattress and your covers for a cooler, deeper sleep all night long," claims the bed brand on their website. "Research suggests a cooler sleep environment helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer with less tossing and turning… for better quality sleep."

Thanks to the three separate cooling layers within this mattress, you'll feel more comfortable as soon as you lay down — one for instant cooling, the next for retaining that coolness, and one more for extreme breathability (which allows heat that normally gets trapped under the covers to be cycled outside of the mattress). Below that are three more layers of comfortable and supportive memory foam to help round out the quality of the mattress.

Wouldn’t it be nice to lie down on a cloud? The Nectar Mattress comes close to this dream with its advanced comfort features. Three foam layers make all the cozy magic happen. An adaptive high-core memory foam layer supports your body without sinking, a gel memory foam evenly distributes your weight, and a quilted gel memory foam increases breathability and air circulation.

Sweat can interfere with your sleep routine, but this online mattress keeps it at bay with its Tencel cooling cover. This fabric helps draw away heat and perspiration, so you can rest at the proper body temperature. Setup is easy for any Nectar mattress. All you have to do is remove the packaging and plastic cover, let the mattress expand, and then you can use it on your bed. There’s minimal effort required on your part.

When it comes to warranties, Nectar is at the top of its game. It has a forever warranty (no, we’re not kidding!), which means that if you bought a mattress, use it, and it experiences wear and tear over time, Nectar will replace the mattress at no charge.

Probably the most notable thing about Saatva's high-density Loom & Leaf mattress is that it has two different firmness options: Firm, and the more popular relaxed firm.

If you're on the heavier side, you know that memory foam beds are usually a little too soft, leading you to sink into the bed — a one-way ticket to back pain. The Loom & Leaf mattress makes up for this with its special high-density foam construction, keeping the mattress soft, but also adequately supportive, no matter your size. Also, due to its durable design, you'll find that the bed doesn't sag or deflate over time, which helps to maintain it's supportive qualities.

The Loom & Leaf is able to achieve all that support by way of only four layers:

  1. Quilted Organic Cotton Cover: Soft and flame retardant outer layer to keep you safe and comfortable.

  2. Cooling Layer: Made from Saatva's spinal zone gel and breathable foam to keep you cool with optimal lumbar support.

  3. Eco-Friendly Foam Layer: Five pounds of cozy, supportive, eco-friendly memory foam that is naturally cool.

  4. Breathable Support Layer: Firm, multi-layer support foam to provide additional deep contouring.

On top of all that, you'll get free white-glove delivery, a 15-year warranty, and a generous 120-day trial.

Layla is newer on the online mattress scene compared to the likes of Casper, Purple, and other big brands. But, they've reinvigorated the category in a big way with their Flippable Hybrid Mattress that hopes to provide a solution to a bevy of sleep ailments. Two unique features separate Layla's mattress from the rest: Its flippable nature and copper infusion.

The fact that the Layla Hybrid bed can be flipped and used in different ways makes it a no-brainer for those who change up their sleep position at a moment's notice. Craving a softer mattress one night, but a firmer one the next? Layla is both — all you have to do is flip.

Those copper-infused layers make for a specially designed pocketed coil system that helps achieve enhanced support no matter what side you end up sleeping on.

Here's how Layla describes each individual layer of the mattress:

  1. Cover (Soft Side): A super-soft fabric, breathable material, integrated handles for easy flipping, and zipper for easy removal to clean.

  2. Copper-Gel Memory Foam: A 2.5-inch layer of soft and plush feeling memory foam for those who prefer the soft side, rapid cooling and body heat transfer, variable support for deep compression areas, and an antimicrobial odor control to keep you sleeping fresh.

  3. Max Airflow Support Foam: 2-inch layer of deep channels for maximum cooling and a zoned Surface Modification Technology (SMT) for customized support to conform to each individual’s body.

  4. Infinity Edge Individually Wrapped Coils System: Thick, 6-inch layer of pocketed coils for maximum motion control and a double coil perimeter for superior edge support.

  5. Another Max Airflow Support Foam Layer

  6. Another Copper-Gel Memory Foam

  7. Cover (Firm Side): A super-soft fabric, breathable material, integrated handles for easy flipping, and zipper for easy removal to clean.

The Amerisleep AS3 is perfect for the in-between sleeper — the sleeper who likes some firmness, but also some softness. Comfort, but also ample support. It's not always easy to find the best of both worlds, but Amerisleep succeeds in that.

The AS3 also shines in the overnight recovery department, with great targeted pressure relief that'll be beneficial to athletes, those whose jobs involve physical labor, and those of us who are simply prone to joint pain from regular daily tasks. It's more responsive than your run-of-the-mill memory foam, offering better pain relief and bounce-back (keeping you from feeling "stuck" while you rest). It gets the medium feel just right by evenly blending support and softness with its Hive layer, which contours to your body and soothes pain-causing pressure points. Plus, with added support under your head, back, and legs, you'll experience enhanced spinal alignment (and extra cushioning under your hips and shoulders).

The Amerisleep AS3 also uses an eco-friendly, plant-based Bio-Pur material that keeps you cool through the night — its open-cell design allows more air to escape than traditional foam, making it effortlessly breathable and effective at wicking away warm air. The mattress is long-lasting, too — it has an industry-leading 20-year warranty, a 100-night trial, and a guarantee to hold out against forming soft spots or sagging.

If you want a mattress that sits nicely at the intersection of support and comfort, you won't go wrong with the Amerisleep AS3.
